About Ljubljana
Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia, and its economic, cultural, educational, health and administrative centre. Ljubljana, referred to as the Europe’s hidden gem, is a small, yet vital capital and university city with more than 40,000 students giving the city a special touch of youth and vibrancy.
The first inhabitants around the swamp of Ljubljana were the bridgeheads that lived there around 2000 b.c. At the beginning of a.c. the area of present-day Ljubljana was inhabited by the Romans, who set up a military camp and named it Emona. Ljubljana acquired the city status in 1220. Unmistakably marked by medieval, Baroque and Secession elements, the architectural image of the contemporary Ljubljana was designed by the world-famous architect Jože Plečnik in the first half of the 20th century. One of the most recognizable symbols of Ljubljana are the dragons of the Dragon Bridge protecting the city. With 286,000 residents, Ljubljana is a compact and relaxed walking city built to the human scale, whose old town quarter is often depicted as a welcoming lounge by meeting planners and delegates alike. With its historical buildings, medieval architecture, and beautiful bridges and museums it features a wealth of history, style, arts and culture, excellent gastronomy and an atmosphere that is both Central European and Mediterranean. Many would add it is a safe, green, multilingual and hospitable city.
